| Thallus pale yellow to pale tan, bullate-areolate; areolae confluent, 0.2–0.5 mm wide, 0.2–0.5 mm thick, esorediate. Photobiont cells to 15 µm wide. Apothecia round, 0.3–0.5 mm diam., sessile; disc jet-black, glossy, plane, then undulate and convex; margin thin, black and glossy, persistent or becoming excluded in old apothecia. Epithecium 8–10 µm thick, chocolate-brown, K+ olive-grey. Excipulum similarly coloured. Hymenium 40–50 µm thick, pale yellow-brown to hyaline, K–. Paraphyses conglutinate, sparingly branched and anastomosing, 2–3 µm thick, regularly tapered, inspersed with minute brownish granules that dissolve in K; apices hyaline, not expanded. Hypothecium 100–150 µm thick, hyaline to pale brown, K–; subhypothecium hyaline, K+ intense yellow. Asci 25–35 × 9–12 µm. Ascospores narrowly ellipsoidal to fusiform, 10–14 × 3–4 µm. CHEMISTRY: Thallus and subhypothecium, K+ intense yellow; containing thamnolic acid. |  |
